Muscle Histochemistry Scheme

The Muscle Histochemistry scheme assesses archived muscle biopsy material using 4 routine muscle staining methods. This scheme is available to both public and private institutions within the UK and overseas and has been running since April 2008.  

Staining Criteria Handbook available in Members' Area
No. of assessment runs: 
6 distributions over a 12 month period 

Stains assessed:
Selected / In-house Material (all runs)
Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) 
Gomori Trichrome 
NADH 
Cytochrome Oxidase (COx)

In addition participants are requested to send the first suitable stained slide for the additional stain as requested from the list below*.


*Additional Stain is requested on a rotational basis (designated on accompanying delivery letter issued with each run)

Acid Phosphatase

Lipid

PAS

Primary fibre typing

Succinate Dehydrogenase (SDH)


If a method is not specified, the laboratory / organisation are free to use any suitable technique to demonstrate the target.

The methods listed may include immunocytochemical techniques where that is the organisation’s method of choice.
