The Bone Marrow Trephine (BMT) Specific Cell Targets Scheme is intended as a “bolt on” to those participants who are already registered with the BMT Biopsy Scheme. The focus of this scheme is the demonstration of specific haemopoietic cell targets (plasma cells, megakaryocytes, mast cells, and erythroid cells) within the BMT biopsy. Demonstration of haemopoietic cell targets are crucial for the evaluation of BMT biopsies for several reasons. They are often used to support morphological assessment, differentiating between normal / reactive and neoplastic infiltrates, assess proliferation and differentiation rates of cells, subtype haematological malignancies, and to monitor minimal residual disease.

Rationale

The BMT Specific Cell Target scheme evaluates specialised methods by assessing archival surgical stained sections for

• Plasma Cells

• Erythroid Cells

• Megakaryocytes

• Mast Cells.

The organisation is free to use any suitable technique to adequately demonstrate the staining method, may include immunohistochemical techniques where that is the organisation’s method of choice.
