Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell Blocks represent an important and valuable tool in a modern cytopathology era, with many Cytopathology centres routinely carrying out preparation of cell blocks to aid in patient diagnostics. This requires in depth technical knowledge along with a judgement of when such a preparation is relevant to the investigation and to the Pathologist. Different methods are utilised for cell block preparation, however the extent of technical variability as well as technical problems in a daily practice are unknown.

Rationale

The Diagnostic Cytopathology Scheme Cell Block is designed to assess the quality of cell block preparations, and their appropriate sampling, preparation and staining for diagnostic purposes. All of these stages need to be completed to the best of our ability in order for the pathologist to have the maximum amount of accurate information in order to inform an accurate diagnosis for the patient.
