Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E)

Frozen sections, or cryosections, are used in pathology for rapid microscopic analysis, especially in oncological surgery. They’re essential for real-time margin control, confirming tumour metastasis, assessing surgical margins, and guiding sentinel node procedures, while surgery is taking place.. While Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining is common, the quality is lower than fixed tissue, with final diagnoses confirmed through further processing. Frozen sections can also detect substances like lipids or antigens missed by traditional methods, and support DNA extraction for genomic analysis.
Rationale
The frozen section scheme assesses archival surgical stained sections, using (H&E) staining employed during the frozen section procedure. The slide requested must be a true representation of that case, and a true representation of the quality performed in that centre as part of their routinely daily workload.
Submission
1 case of 1 H&E stained frozen section slide, as designated on the delivery letter.
